One-way Sahara desert tour across the Atlas Mountains with camel trek & luxury camp
Discover the ultimate Morocco cross-country adventure with this 3-day one-way tour from Marrakech to Fes via the legendary Merzouga Sahara Desert. This thoughtfully designed itinerary takes you from the bustling souks of the Red City, across the majestic High Atlas Mountains, through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, and deep into the vast golden dunes of the Sahara. It is the perfect solution for travelers who want to experience Morocco's most iconic landscapes while efficiently moving between two of the country's most important imperial cities.
Unlike round-trip tours, this one-way journey maximizes your time by ending in the ancient medina of Fes, where you can continue exploring Morocco's cultural capital without doubling back. Along the way, you will enjoy a breathtaking sunset camel trek through the Erg Chebbi dunes, spend a magical night in a luxury desert camp under the stars, and witness a spectacular Sahara sunrise — all while your professional driver handles every detail of the route. Your luggage travels safely with you from start to finish.
Begin your cross-country adventure with an early morning pickup from your Marrakech riad or hotel at approximately 7:30 AM. Travel south in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, climbing through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the legendary Tizi n'Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, where panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, deep terraced valleys, and scattered Berber villages will leave you breathless. Stop at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou, one of the best-preserved ancient kasbahs in Morocco, where you can explore the towering rammed-earth fortifications, wander through the narrow alleyways, and even climb to the summit for sweeping views of the surrounding desert landscape. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch at a local restaurant with panoramic views of the ksar, then continue south through the semi-arid desert landscape, passing through the town of Ouarzazate and the vast stony plains of the pre-Saharan region. Arrive in Merzouga on the edge of the magnificent Erg Chebbi dunes just as the setting sun begins to paint the golden sand in brilliant shades of amber and rose, marking the perfect end to your first day.
After a relaxing morning exploring the charming desert town of Merzouga and meeting the warm local Berber families who call this remote landscape home, prepare for the highlight of your adventure. In the mid-afternoon, embark on an unforgettable camel trek into the vast golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, where some dunes tower over 150 meters. Led by experienced Berber guides, ride your dromedary camel across the undulating desert landscape as the sun dips towards the horizon, creating a magical display of colors across the endless sea of sand. Arrive at your luxury desert camp nestled among the towering dunes, where you will be greeted with traditional mint tea and warm Berber hospitality. Savor a delicious dinner of Moroccan tagine, couscous, and freshly baked bread prepared over an open fire, then relax around the campfire listening to authentic Berber drum music and folk songs. As the night deepens, gaze up at the breathtaking canopy of millions of Saharan stars — far from any light pollution, the Milky Way stretches across the sky in all its glory. Sleep soundly in your private desert tent with comfortable bedding and en-suite facilities, lulled by the gentle silence of the vast Sahara.
Rise before dawn for one of the most awe-inspiring moments of your life — watching the sun rise over the Sahara Desert. As the first golden rays of light touch the crests of the towering dunes, the entire landscape transforms through a breathtaking palette of colors that no camera can truly capture. After this magical experience, ride your camel back to Merzouga, enjoy a hearty breakfast, and freshen up at the guesthouse. Begin the scenic drive north towards Fes, traveling through the spectacular Ziz Valley — a dramatic canyon lined with thousands of date palm trees stretching as far as the eye can see, with ancient kasbahs perched on the clifftops above. Stop at the panoramic viewpoint overlooking the vast canyon, then continue through the charming Berber town of Midelt, nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains. Drive through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where you may spot Barbary macaques playing in the trees and wild birds soaring overhead. Descend through the rolling green hills and fertile plains of the Saiss region before arriving in the magnificent imperial city of Fes in the early evening, where your driver will drop you at your accommodation, concluding this extraordinary desert-to-city adventure.

"This one-way tour from Marrakech to Fes was exactly what we needed. We didn't want to waste time driving back to Marrakech, so ending in Fes was perfect. The camel trek at sunset was magical, the desert camp was luxurious, and the drive through the Ziz Valley was stunning. Our guide Hassan knew every scenic stop and local gem along the way. Highly recommend this tour for anyone doing a Morocco loop!"
